Newcastle United's transfer window has, for the most part, been a living nightmare, having missed out on several big names already this summer.

Fortunately, it hasn't all been bad news as the Magpies did fill the right-wing spot fairly early, with that being the top priority heading into the new season.

Having sold Miguel Almiron, Newcastle only had Jacob Murphy as a recognised right winger, and after failed attempts at playing Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes on the right, it was clear that another winger was absolutely necessary this summer.

Anthony Elanga had been on Newcastle's radar for a while, with Eddie Howe seeing him as the perfect type of player for his style of play. The Magpies ultimately got their man for £55 million, and now the 23-year-old has hit the ground running at the Toon, scoring on Sunday in his first start for the Magpies.

Elliot Anderson is still out there doing NUFC's bidding

Newcastle fans have praised Will Osula for helping to convince Elanga to join the club as the two are really close friends and, as shown on Osula's social media, the pair had spent a lot of time together in the off-season before the move happened. Even the club got in on the joke, posting a small "Agent Osula" clip on social media.

It turns out that Osula wasn't the only player connected with Newcastle who pushed Elanga in the right direction. Former Newcastle star, and now former teammate of Elanga, Elliot Anderson, really hyped up the club, according to Elanga, during an interview in Singapore.

“When I found out about the interest, Elliot [Anderson] and Chris Wood spoke to me a lot. Elliot did push it, he did push me to come, he obviously still loves Newcastle so much.

“He was at the [Carabao Cup] final last year, so I took his word for it on how much he loves the club and how much the club would help me develop as a player. I took the opportunity to come here and I really want to develop and to become the best player I possibly can.”

Newcastle need one big signing to lift the cloud over the club

Newcastle could do with a few more 'agents' out there talking to prospective players to convince them to join after so many failed moves this summer.

There's still a long way to go in the transfer market, and things can change very quickly, and let's be honest, they need to.

So much is up in the air right now that it's hard to get too excited about the campaign ahead, with the squad effectively being weaker than it was this time last year. Newcastle still need three or four players through the door, but all it will take is one big signing to lift the cloud.
