A friendly between Celtic and Newcastle United has been rumoured for a while now, and today brought confirmation that the game is set to go ahead.

It will be the first ever Adidas Trophy as the English and Scottish League Cup holders meet at Celtic Park on Saturday 19th July at 3pm.

Newcastle have been allocated 7200 tickets for the game, which should generate a good pre-season atmosphere in Glasgow.

This friendly comes before the Magpies jet off to Asia to face Arsenal in the Singapore Festival of Football on July 27th.

Newcastle will head to Celtic Park

Eddie Howe is excited to take his side to Celtic this summer

Following the announcement, Eddie Howe told the official website that the fixture is a great opportunity for the Magpies.

"Travelling to Glasgow, to face Celtic, is a great opportunity to test ourselves as we gear up for Premier League and European football next season.

"We'll face a top team at an historic ground, with a big away crowd there to support us."

Newcastle will return to Celtic Park for the first time in 21 years

It has been over 20 years since the Magpies last visited Celtic Park under the guidance of Sir Bobby Robson in 2004, with a reverse fixture two years later for Alan Shearer's testimonial.

It's great that the club is back to putting on away-day friendlies a bit closer to home, and of course, there'll be the Sela Weekender to close out pre-season.

There have been rumours of another trip to Germany to train at the Adidas HQ, but nothing has been confirmed on that front as yet.
