Newcastle United fans can get first glimpse of Carabao Cup trophy at St James' Park on Sunday and break a record at same time

Sunday is derby day as Newcastle United Women take on Sunderland Women at St James' Park as the lasses look to set a new record in the Women's Championship.

The two sides meet at 2pm at St James' Park with just one point separating the sides in the league. Newcastle sit one point behind their rivals in 7th place but the Magpies have two games in hand over the Black Cats.

Newcastle lasses are also keen to set a record attendance in the Women's Championship with the extra incentive being that the current record holders are indeed Sunday's opponents.

Their 15,387 attendance set the record in October when Newcastle visited the Stadium of Light. The benchmark has been set and Newcastle are determined to beat it.

You can still pick up tickets via the website, with prices starting at just £8 for adults and £2 for concessions.

If beating a Mackem record and seeing the lasses get one over on their bitter rivals on the pitch wasn't enough, Darren Eales and Bob Moncur will also bring out the Carabao Cup trophy onto the St James' Park pitch for the first time.

The move to unveil the trophy in a match doesn't involve the actual side that won it has caused a bit of a stir in some quarters, but you can't deny that it's a genius marketing move to ensure they beat that attendance record.

Genius marketing or a cheap trick? What are your thoughts?

I was locked in a debate with a friend about this last night who admitted he might be being a touch precious, but he was vehemently opposed to wheeling the trophy out during a game where none of the players who actually won it will even be in attendance. It's a fair point.

However, the official celebration falls one day short of a full fortnight since the cup was won, so an early opportunity to see the trophy shining in the Tyneside sun might just keep the buzz alive (not that there's any real chance of it dying off).

I'm sure that the appearance on Sunday won't diminish the impact of the celebration on the 29th which in turn won't dampen the reception when it's no doubt carried out onto the pitch again when Brentford come to visit on the 2nd April.
