Manchester United have had a hefty bid rejected by Everton for defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

They now have their eyes set on another Toffee who Newcastle United tried to land earlier this summer.

Branthwaite has been linked with a move away from Everton this summer following a successful season which nearly landed him in the England squad for EURO 2024.

As a result of his good form, the Red Devils bid £35million for the 22-year-old which Everton knocked back.

Yesterday, an improved bid of £45m with £5m add-ons was placed which was knocked back by the Toffees again.

Everton are looking for at least £70m for Branthwaite.

Manchester United are interested in Newcastle target Dominic Calvert-Lewin

This is according to The Athletic, who have reported that the Salford-based club are keen on signing Branthwaite's teammate Calvert-Lewin who looks set for a move away from Everton this summer.

Newcastle are also interested in signing the 27-year-old and nearly did when it looked like the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules were going to force the Magpies into dealing with Everton.

A PSR-friendly swap deal which would've meant Yankuba Minteh's departure would've been to Everton rather than Brighton with Calvert-Lewin would've gone the other way.

However, the deal fell through and the Englishman still remains at the Toffees.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to come in as backup for Alexander Isak

The former England international was left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for the European Championships and it looks like a move away from the club could be the only way to get back into the squad following a disappointing season for his club.

Calvert-Lewin managed seven goals in 32 Premier League games but had to endure a 20-game goal drought.

Newcastle are hoping to agree a fee of around £30m for the 27-year-old, who would act as backup for the Magpies' star striker Alexander Isak with rumours of Callum Wilson leaving the club this summer.
