It is being widely reported once again that Newcastle United will have another crack at trying to bring Crystal Palace defender to Tyneside this summer.
Newcastle were embarrassed by Steve Parish and Crystal Palace last summer as the London club strung the Magpies along with false hope of a deal getting done, moving the goalposts every time a deal looked to be getting close before pulling the rug entirely the night before transfer deadline day.
Undeterred by their shenanigans, though, Newcastle are expected to go back to Crystal Palace this summer with another bid for the England centre back, with the Magpies in a much better negotiating position this time around, thanks to Guehi entering the final year of his contract.
However, unlike last year, Guehi will not be Newcastle's sole focus, so if Palace want to play games again, Newcastle will simply walk away.
There are plenty of alternative options for Newcastle and Paul Mitchell may have identified another one to add to the list.
According to GiveMeSport, Newcastle are eyeing Wilfried Singo from Mitchell's former club, AS Monaco.
Dubbed as 'one of the best defenders in Ligue 1' by GFFN, the 24-year-old ticks a lot of boxes for Newcastle and could be available for as little as £15 million with Newcastle confident that a deal can be reached.
Wilfried Singo can play centre-back or right back, which would make him instantly appeal to Eddie Howe, who loves a bit of versatility in his players.
Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham have all been linked with Singo too, but there seems to be a confidence that Newcastle can beat them to his signature. Paul Mitchell's Monaco connections surely won't hurt.
It may be a bit more of a risk in terms of Premier League experience than opting for Marc Guehi, but at £15 million, and given the fact that Singo has Champions League experience, we're wondering why this is even a debate?
We'll admit we've never seen him play ourselves beyond YouTube compilations, but we have seen Guehi play, and while he is good, we still feel his fee doesn't reflect his capabilities. Plus, sprinkle on the bitterness from last year's negotiations, and we're understandably hesitant about dealing with Palace again. So let's just go get this lad and see what happens.
