Newcastle United's 4-1 defeat at Villa Park on Saturday left the Magpies in a vulnerable position as they tried to cling on to third spot in the Premier League.

Avoiding defeat would have kept Eddie Howe's boys in third going into next week's fixtures, but Aston Villa blew Newcastle away on their own soil on Saturday, leaving Nottingham Forest in a good position to reclaim their spot.

Forest travelled down to London to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night, knowing that a win against Ange Postecoglou's struggling Spurs would take them up the table.

In any other season you'd back Spurs to get the three points in this fixture but as good as Forest have been this season, Spurs have been absolutely terrible, leaving only one likely outcome.

Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood stuck the knife in Newcastle United's heart

I think most Newcastle United fans were expecting Forest to do what they needed to do on Monday night, but were we expecting to be stabbed in the back by two former players?

Newcastle fan favourite and academy graduate Elliot Anderson opened the scoring on just five minutes, and then around 10 minutes later, former Toon striker Chris Wood doubled their lead.

I mean, Chris Wood scored a hat-trick for Forest at St James' Park, so we're not shocked at his betrayal, but Anderson, you're one of our own. What are you doing, man?

The race for the Champions League is the only thing left to play for

Tottenham did us no favours either, wasting chance after chance before Richarlison popped up with a goal on 87 minutes, but it was too little, too late.

Newcastle now sit one point behind Nottingham Forest in the table and just one point ahead of Man City and two points ahead of Chelsea and Aston Villa.

This top-five race is going to go down to the wire, for sure. At least there's still something to play for in the Premier League to keep it exciting.
