Newcastle United remain irritatingly quiet in the transfer market in terms of first-team additions and departures.

The Magpies have been hobbling along since December with limited options in defence but as we enter the final week of the winter transfer window, there are still no signs of movement from the club in terms of incomings.

The academy has been active in terms of cutting down player numbers. Today, another one of their ranks has flown the nest, albeit temporarily.

Charlie McArthur, the young Scottish defender, has returned to his homeland to play for Airdrieonians in the Scottish Championship for the remainder of the season.

Charlie McArthur is heading to Airdrie for the rest of the season

McArthur is the latest in a line of youngsters who have moved on from the club this month, some on loan and others, namely Ben Parkinson, who also moved to Scotland, have moved on permanently.

We wish Charlie all the best at Airdrie, and we hope he gets plenty of match time an exprience while he's there.

Meanwhile, we are left wondering if there will be any first-team additions before the window slams shut on 2nd February.

Where's the statement of intent from the new bosses?

Eddie Howe spoke about Dan Burn's imminent return to action as being like a new signing earlier this week, but it's not, though, is it? It's not like a new signing at all.

What would be like a new signing is ... a new signing. We aren't necessarily desperate for new faces; the team are doing a decent enough job, but it often feels like there's a lack of ambition at times.

This is the first transfer window with our new CEO and sporting director in place, and we're just wondering where the intent is. Where's the play that announces their arrival on the big stage? Don't they want to make a statement?
