Newcastle United are on the hunt for a versatile forward who can play out on the right but also through the middle if needs be.

It seems, on the surface, to be a cost-saving exercise - why by two top players if you can find one to fill two positions? It makes sense to a point, right up until you're hit with another injury crisis and you start to wish you'd just signed two players.

One player Newcastle have long had their eye on, who can fill several roles, is Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian has been on Newcastle's wishlist for a long time, and this summer looks like their best opportunity to land their man.

Newcastle have admired Matheus Cunha for a while

Fabrizio Romano believes Matheus Cunha would be an ideal signing for Newcastle

Unfortunately for Newcastle, though, Cunha has had an impressive season despite playing in a terrible Wolves team, and that has alerted other clubs to his talents, and with a £62.5 million release clause in play this summer, things are expected to get feisty when it comes to signing the 25-year-old.

Fabrizio Romano has told Give Me Sport that he expects Cunha's move away from Wolves will come quickly this summer and namechecks Newcastle as a potential destination.

“Yeah, I think it can be a quick deal, to be honest. I think so. Let's see how quick, but I think this can be a quick deal.

“Because, as you mentioned, there is a release clause and all parties involved, the player, club, they really want to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

“So I think it can be a quick deal. There is genuine interest from Newcastle. They really, really like the player. They believe it could be perfect for their style.”

Some fans are concerned about Matheus Cunha's disciplinary record

While the club are big fans of Matheus Cunha, a portion of the Newcastle fanbase still needs convincing.

It doesn't sound like anyone is questioning his ability, but more his temperament. The Brazilian has a tendency to lose his head and get himself into trouble - must be a Brazilian thing.

We are confident that a bit of time in Eddie Howe's hands and he'll be a much calmer person. I don't think Eddie will knock the rage out of him entirely as he needs it to be the player he is, but he's settled Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes down, and they share that same fiery nature as Cunha.
