Manchester United recently made the long-awaited call to relieve Ruben Amorim of his duties as manager.

Despite only scraping a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, Man United were looking far better this season than they did during the last campaign, so it was strange that the board decided to pull the trigger when they did.

Not that we mind, the longer that club continues to be a circus, the more enjoyment we as Newcastle United fans will get out of it.

Now it seems that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is turning to a couple of men with Newcastle connections to turn things around.

Toon fan Michael Carrick has agreed to take over the reins at Manchester United for the rest of the season

It's now being reported that former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will take over as caretaker manager for the rest of the season.

Carrick was recently manager at Middlesbrough, but before his career kicked off at West Ham, Carrick was part of the legendary Wallsend Boys Club, having been born in Wallsend himself.

He never managed to realise his dream of playing for his beloved Newcastle United; however, as West Ham snapped him up early.

Jonathan Woodgate will help Michael Carrick at Old Trafford

Joining Carrick will be another man with connections to Newcastle and Middlesbrough, in Jonathan Woodgate.

Woodgate is often cited as being one of the best defenders to ever wear the black and white, but his career was blighted by injuries.

As much as we love Woodgate and appreciate Carrick as a fellow Toon fan, we can't go as far as wishing them the best on this venture.
