Newcastle United have now confirmed what we already knew, that Jamal Lewis has moved to Brazilian side Sao Paulo.

The £15 million signing from Norwich has moved to Brazil on loan for the season with the deal containing an option to make the move permanent as confirmed by Newcastle via the official website.

It's worth noting the wording used by the club with regards to the option contained in the deal. It's not an option to buy but an option to make the move permanent.

Jamal Lewis' contract is set to expire on 30th June 2025, the same day as his Sao Paulo contract, but the Brazilian club will have first refusal as Lewis plots his next move as he leaves Newcastle.

The move to Sao Paulo will see the end of Lewis' Newcastle career

This move effectively brings and end to Lewis' time on Tyneside after arriving on a five-year contract in 2020.

Newcastle have been trying to find a new club for Jamal Lewis since Eddie Howe arrived at the club but have only managed to find loan moves for the left-back.

The club won't recoup any of the huge fee they paid back in 2020 but at least it's another wage off the bill.

Lewis has made 36 appearances in four years for Newcastle

The announcement by the club states that Lewis arrived in 2020 and has made 36 appearances for the Magpies, and also that he's made as many appearances for his country. That's a pretty damning statistic really.

Considering we paid £15 million for him with expectations of him becoming a first-team regular, things haven't exactly panned out for Lewis.

He's been unlucky with injuries as well, in fairness, but his time at Newcastle will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, unfortunately.
