Graham Potter has taken over the hot seat for the Sweden national team after former Newcastle United striker Jon Dahl Tomasson was relieved of his duties last week.

Tomasson became the first man ever to be sacked as coach of Sweden, as they are perilously close to failing to qualify for next year's World Cup.

The Swedish FA have turned to Graham Potter and handed the Englishman a short-term contract in a bid to see if he can salvage their qualification hopes.

It's a borderline impossible task, but the former Brighton manager is hoping that current Newcastle United coach Graeme Jones can help him achieve his goal.

Graham Potter wants Graeme Jones at Sweden

The Daily Mail have reported that Potter sees Jones as an ideal candidate to help him get the best out of the struggling Swedes.

Jones already has experience at the international level, having worked with Belgium and England, and Potter will be aware that Jones has managed to get the best out of Alexander Isak at Newcastle.

The report suggests that the role would be part-time for Jones, at least initially, which he has done before when he was part of the England set-up, so Newcastle wouldn't lose out.

Graeme Jones has been a quality addition to the Newcastle United coaching team

Should Potter manage to help Sweden qualify for the World Cup, then it's likely his contract will be extended beyond March, and then Jones would likely be given a decision to make.

Jones has been monumental for Newcastle since his appointment under Steve Bruce, with many fans giving Jones the credit for every good performance under Bruce following his arrival.

Eddie Howe must have thought the same, too, opting to keep him on as part of his staff.
