With everything that has gone on with Newcastle United this summer, we had genuinely forgotten that the club had put in place plans to change the current club crest.

The badge, which has been Newcastle's identifier since 1988, is, much like the stadium and training ground, a part of the club's plans to be changed - although, if the badge redesign takes as long as the stadium and training ground announcements, we've got plenty of time with the current one for now.

Newcastle United consulted with fans on the potential redesign, and as part of the survey, they were asked which aspects of the current badge are most important.

The idea is to update the badge rather than completely reinvent it, although reinvention isn't alien to the club, as each new badge has been drastically different to the one previous.

A new badge is on the horizon

Newcastle announced plans to redesign the current badge in May

As reported by The Chronicle, the aspect of the current badge that fans are most attached to is the castle, followed by the ribbon and the shield.

Mockup designs flooded the internet in May after the announcement was made, and in fairness, despite a lot of opposition to the very idea of change - we know how some fans really don't like change - there were some impressive designs doing the rounds.

However, there was one that went viral, which was supposed to be part of the club's initial presentation, which went down like a lead balloon.

About as bad as it gets

Did the club cherry-pick the fans who got the survey to maximise positivity or is the internet not a true representation of the fanbase?

Despite the online uproar about the idea, The Chronicle's report claims that four out of five fans who gave feedback saw the need for a redesign.

Whether those who were so vocally opposed online didn't take part, or were just rage baiting for cloud, we'll never know.

A badge redesign does feel like something that should go along with a new stadium, though, and on that, we hope to hear some updates in the near future.
