Newcastle United are still 'convinced' £50m centre-back will be ideal signing after failing to secure signature last year

Newcastle United don't tend move on from transfer targets at the drop of a hat that's for sure as the same names will keep reappearing month after month.

Last summer Newcastle spent a lot of time speaking with Crystal Palace over a deal for England centre-back Marc Guehi and were willing to pay upwards of £60 million to get a deal done.

Ultimately, the deal fell apart as it became clear the Crystal Palace co-owner Steve Parish never had any intention of doing a deal.

It felt like that was Newcastle's only target for the summer and it was pretty much Guehi or nobody.

Chris Waug says Newcastle could return to try again for Marc Guehi

It sounds as though Newcastle aren't quite done with their pursuit of Marc Guehi despite all of the bad faith negotiations last summer.

Chris Waugh has said in this week's Q&A with The Athletic that Newcastle are still convinced that Guehi would be the ideal signing for them to add to their defence and as such may revisit a move again.

"Newcastle remain convinced that Guehi would be an ideal addition and would strengthen their first XI and they have continued to monitor him closely. Part of the reason why they would have spent big on him last summer — if not at the £60million-plus ($80.3m) price that was mooted, then potentially at £50m-plus — and risked having to make further sales is because several senior figures felt he was a long-term solution to their right-sided centre-back position."

Newcastle fans seem to be over the idea of Marc Guehi altogether

Waugh does go on to suggest that the Magpies will not be drawn into a bidding war, so if there is plenty of competition for Guehi, they will likely look elsewhere.

After last summer's debacle, the general feeling we get is that fans would prefer that Newcastle looked to other targets rather than going back to this particular well.

In fact, many fans were ready to walk away from the deal last year before things started getting out of hand.
