Newcastle United are confident latest Italian betting investigation will not affect Sandro Tonali despite reports

Shortly after joining Newcastle United from AC Milan, Sandro Tonali was caught up in a betting scandal which saw the Italy midfielder handed a 10-month ban from all football.

At the time, Tonali admitted his guilt and cooperated with the Italian Football Federation in their investigation, served his ban and underwent therapy for gambling addiction, checking off every box required of him.

Since returning from his ban, Tonali has been like a whole new player, it's as if easing himself of all that guilt has literally lifted a weight from him, and he seems even sharper, faster and more determined.

However, his name is back in the spotlight after the Italian authorities have opened up a fresh investigation into betting and money laundering in football.

Even though Tonali is not thought to have any involvement in this case, Italian papers, and subsequently rags like The Sun have used his name to sell the story and are even inciting fears of a prison sentence.

Thankfully, The Chronicle has reported that sources inside the club are confident that there will be no comeback from this investigation on Tonali.

Italian authorities have made several arrests already and 12 players have been named as being part of the scandal and Sandro Tonali is not one of them.

The Chronicle also notes that this is not a new investigation but rather an update on one that has been rumbling on in the background, which is another reason why the club are confident that Tonali has nothing to worry about.

As stated before, Tonali cooperated fully with the initial investigation and if there was anything else to worry about, then it would have been uncovered as part of that scrutinisation.

The list of players who should be worried includes a former Manchester United man as The Chronicle reports them to include Juventus pair Weston McKennie and Mattia Perin, Roma's Leandro Paredes, Atalanta's Raoul Bellanova, Torino's Samuele Ricci, Angel Di Maria, now at Benfica, and Fiorentina's Nicolo Fagioli.
