Newcastle United and Burnley are miles apart on valuation of goalkeeper James Trafford as talks continue

It came out yesterday that Newcastle United were in talks with Burnley over a potential move for young England goalkeeper James Trafford.

The only surprise here is that it took so long to get this far after Newcastle almost had a £20 million deal wrapped up for Trafford last summer before PSR concerns caused the deal to collapse.

James Trafford has since spoken of being 'upset' that the move collapsed, but it did little to hinder his performances last season.

Burnley regained promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, thanks in no small part to James Trafford. The 22-year-old kept an astonishing 26 clean sheets in the Championship, one of which came after saving two penalties in a game against Sunderland.

Thanks to Burnley's promotion and Trafford's excellent season, it's no surprise that the £20 million it would have taken to seal the deal last year will no longer cut it with many outlets reporting that it will take upwards of £30 million to seal the deal this summer.

However, The Daily Mail are now claiming that Burnley have set a £40 million valuation on Trafford, which Newcastle are very reluctant to pay.

That disparity means that a deal is nowhere near being close as things stand, but there should be no cause to panic.

There's still plenty of time for Newcastle to get business done

As long as Burnley don't pull a Steve Parish and string Newcastle along all summer with no intention of selling, then there's plenty of time to get the deal done, with all signs indicating that Trafford is very keen on the move.

The mini transfer window closed yesterday as the Club World Cup is about to get underway, and the main summer trading period will commence on 16th June.

There is, of course, the soft deadline day still to come. That being the PSR reporting deadline, which comes at the end of this month. Newcastle may well be deliberately stalling on any deals to make sure all of their business falls in the new reporting cycle. Although that does conflict with Eddie Howe's wish of having as many deals done as possible before they return to training on 1st July.
