Newcastle United took on out-of-form and depleted Tottenham Hotspur in North London on Saturday lunchtime coming away with a 2-1 win.

Spurs got off to a flying start with Dominic Solanke nodding them into an early lead on just four minutes, beating Newcastle at their own game of scoring early.

However, their celebrations lasted just two minutes before Anthony Gordon fired in a controversial equaliser as Spurs players screamed for a handball decision that never came.

Newcastle grew into the first half and started to control the game brilliantly before Alexander Isak got the gentlest of touches on a Jacob Murphy cross to put the Magpies into the lead.

Newcastle fell off the pace in the second half but still held on

The second half was all Tottenham, but despite their possession, they failed to really trouble Newcastle too much. They did strike the post and Dubravka had the odd save to make, but Newcastle's defence was organised and up to the task.

Sven Botman started the game and lasted more than 90 minutes before coming off with what looked like a cramp. At least we hope it was just cramp.

The Dutchman certainly has some rust to shake off and was possibly at fault for Solanke's opener, but overall he had a decent game given that he's been out for nine months.

Andy Madley had a shocking game as referee

Who didn't have a great game was referee Andy Madley who made some baffling calls. Anthony Gordon was poleaxed in the box and may well have a broken nose, but nothing was given.

Then just a few minutes later, James Maddison is involved in a very similar incident just outside the area and he got a free kick.

A whopping 10 minutes of stoppage time was added on at the end of the game but Madley didn't blow the whistle until 13 extra minutes had been played. It was like he was just making things up as he went along all afternoon.

However, none of that takes away from the fact that it's now six wins in a row in all competitions for Newcastle who now move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea. Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final are up next. Can we keep the run going?
