Newcastle United are reportedly in talks with Burnley over a deal for young England goalkeeper James Trafford after a move for the stopper collapsed last year.

James Trafford had an exceptional season with Burnley, helping the Clarets return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, which has added a few million pounds to his asking price, which the two clubs are said to be negotiating.

Last year, a move for £20 million looked to be in place, but PSR reared its ugly head, and Newcastle had to pull out, but they maintained a strong interest in the 22-year-old, who also seems very keen on the move.

However, Newcastle's goalkeeping position is an odd one with five keepers in the first team squad last season, none of whom has a guaranteed future at the club.

Newcastle's goalkeeper situation doesn't get any less baffling

Nick Pope is expected to stay regardless of Trafford's arrival, but there is interest in our current No. 1, while Martin Dubravka was close to leaving in January before he was begged to stay. Odysseas Vlachodimos should never have been signed in the first place, while John Ruddy is in talks over a possible contract extension and could still leave. Newcastle fan Mark Gillespie has signed a new deal, so he's likely to stay, but he's nothing more than a sentient training dummy if truth be told.

So with all that up in the air, Newcastle could look to move some of the five goalkeepers on and could maybe need to sign a replacement.

Given Newcastle's well-publicised search for a goalkeeper, it's no shock that representatives of Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen have included the Magpies as they offer the German keeper to several Premier League clubs this summer, according to The Boot Room.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen's people have had no nibbles as yet

The 33-year-old looks to be heading out of Barcelona after they confirmed the signing of Espanyol's keeper Joan Garcia, who was also linked with Newcastle.

However, as TBR points out, none of the Premier League clubs have shown any indication of making a move for ter Stegen as yet.

We don't see Newcastle making a move, although his experience could be invaluable, and if Newcastle do opt to move Nick Pope on this summer, we could do a lot worse.
