Newcastle United are set to offer Anthony Gordon a mammoth new deal which will make him the club's highest player.

The Magpies made the mistake of floating the idea of selling Anthony Gordon in the summer as the club tried to find ways to stave off potential sanctions for breaching FFP.

Liverpool were thought to be the club likely to take Gordon off our hands before Newcastle were able to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to plug the PSR gap.

Unfortunately, that Gordon to Liverpool story got out and it became a huge focus of the summer window with the media determined to make it happen.

Anthony Gordon could become Newcastle's highest paid player

Anthony Gordon's head was turned by the Liverpool rumours

Gordon was out in Germany at the time with England and it has been widely reported that the boyhood Liverpool fan was actually keen on the move, but Newcastle ultimately came to their senses and declared Gordon as not for sale.

However, the genie was out of the bottle at that point, so Newcastle knew they'd have to do something to prove to Gordon that they want him at St James' Park.

Newcastle are now, according to The Daily Mail, set to offer Gordon a new deal at the club which would see him net £9 million a year and become the club's highest earner ahead of captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle may sell Anthony Gordon in the summer if he doesn't sign new deal

It's a huge statement by the club and hopefully, one that will make up for their stupid error in the summer.

That being said, though, the Mail claims that if Gordon and Newcastle can't reach an agreement on the new deal, they will consider selling the England star in the Summer.

It seems a bit like cutting your nose off to spite your face but given that Gordon's current deal expires in 2026 it would be their last opportunity to get any real return on the £45 million investment.
