The main transfer story for Newcastle United over the summer was the seemingly endless pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Newcastle opened negotiations with Crystal Palace with an initial bid believed to be around £55 million but as negotiations went on the Magpies ended up at a figure believed to be around £70 million which is what many outlets reported would be the magic number to get the deal done.

Unfortunately, this proved not to be the case and the deal broke down on deadline day leaving Newcastle next to no time to find a replacement.

Newcastle had been taken for a ride by Crystal Palace and as a result a dark cloud formed over the club which took a long time to dissipate.

Marc Guehi tried to ignore all the transfer speculation

The Marc Guehi saga was a tough pill to swallow for Newcastle fans

While the protracted deal had a negative affect on the feeling around Newcastle United, it can't have been easy for Marc Guehi either who wanted the move to happen by all accounts.

After acquitting himself brilliantly for England at Euro 2024, Newcastle fans were excited by the prospect of Guehi becoming a Newcastle player, however since the new season has got underway, Crystal Palace have struggled and Guehi has also struggled to find form.

However, Guehi put in a quality performance for England against Finland on Sunday. While away on international duty, Guehi spoke to TalkSPORT (via The Chronicle) to address his difficult start to the season.

Guehi spoke about the transfer speculation with Newcastle

Guehi touched on how he dealt with the constant speculation regarding his future during the summer and what he did to put it to one side.

“I’d say [it has been] quite tough not having a pre-season, not having much of a break and going straight back into it. I kind of handled it as best as I could. The Euros was such an amazing experience but just not quite getting there.

“And since then I’ve just tried to get my head down [amid transfer rumours], tried to get to work. It’s been a tough start for us at Palace, but I think everyone’s pulling in the right direction to try and get ourselves back to where we want to be.”

It's still up in the air whether Newcastle will try again for Guehi in January or the summer with conflicting information circulating on the matter. Only time will tell.
