Having been first to the news of Sandro Tonali's £52 million transfer to Newcastle, it seems like Simon Jones of The Mail might have had the inside track on another huge deal for the club.

On Monday, we shared Jones' story that Newcastle were back in for Harvey Barnes, with the journalist asserting that Leicester City were expected to ask around £35 million for the winger.

And this evening, The Telegraph's Matt Law, one of the most reputable writers in the English media, has gone a step further by saying Newcastle are expecting to complete a deal for Barnes next week.

Law has the fee at between £35 million and £40 million and reports that NUFC have beaten both Aston Villa and West Ham to Barnes' signature, largely due to the lure of Champions League football.

Barnes scored 13 goals and provided one assist for relegated Leicester last term. Newcastle's interest in the right-footed left-winger stretched back a year when the club was quoted almost £60 million for his signature.

If you'd offered us Tonali and Barnes as our first two signings of this summer, we'd have snapped your arm off. Here's hoping there's one or two more of this calibre still to come! And here's a Barnes highlight reel to whet your appetite:
