There are some fanbases in football the come with a sense of entitlement, sometimes it's justified and sometimes it's actually quite baffling. From the outside, a lot of rival fans believe Newcastle United supporters have an air of entitlement, but nothing could be further from the truth - for the most part.

Entitlement does seem to be creeping into the fanbase as people seem to expect Newcastle to win every game. At NUFCFEED we've followed Newcastle long enough to know that even when things are good, always expect the other shoe to drop.

There's a renewed optimism at Newcastle since the takeover, and that would still have been the case had the club not progressed so quickly under the new ownership, qualifying for the Champions League and going to a cup final. Those little tastes of success have been enough to raise the level of expectation to unrealistic levels too early.

We will get there, as long as the authorities don't keep doing their hardest to put up road blocks, but it's going to take time, especially in the current climate of Profit and Sustainability Rules and Associated Party Transaction rules.

There is definitely a renewed optimism inside St James' Park but no entitlement

Keith Wyness has been very complimentary of the job the PIF has done at Newcastle

I think the vast majority of Newcastle fans understand that and it's really only the shouty online minority who demand instant success, but they're the ones who get noticed.

Football Insider's go-to man right now is former Everton CEO Keith Wyness who always seems to have something to say about Newcastle, but often it's so far wide of the mark we roll our eyes and move on, but his most recent Newcastle-based chat was very complimentary, albeit mixed in with some very incorrect assumptions.

“It’s fantastic progress, I’ve got to give them full marks they’ve done a great job.

“If it hadn’t been for some of the injuries last season Newcastle may have finished back up the table again.

“The spirit in the north east now, to qualify for the Champions League and their performances within the Champions League, the expectation now are at a completely different level.

“Seeing the Newcastle fans at Everton at the weekend, they’re expecting to win every game now, they’re expecting to win the league and that’s a complete reset of the expectations from the Mike Ashley era.

“So, PIF have done a great job and here we are just discussing a potential new stadium plan, a new training ground.

“All of these things are signs for the future, and they’ve given the fans hope, they’ve reignited the passion up in the north east, which I don’t think was ever dying, but certainly was reignited, so I give PIF full marks for this.

“They’ve been patient, they didn’t jump into it and just throw money at it so I think they’ve done a great job.

“It’s been better than expected.”

Saying Newcastle fans 'expect' to win the league is unfair

Our fans, our true fans with common sense, have never 'expected' to win the league. We have obviously hoped to, and we sing about it and talk about it, there's nothing wrong with getting carried away, but to say that we 'expect' it, is unfair.

We hope that Wyness was just employing a spot of hyperbole to make his point as the rest of what he said was actually really nice.

Anyway, we're just getting ready to batter Brighton 9-0 next week. Who's coming?
