It's coming to that time of the year when Newcastle United get linked to any player considered to be likely to leave their current club.

Sometimes though, the same names keep popping up time after time which does get you wondering if there's truth to the rumours.

One name that keeps appearing next to that of Newcastle United's is that of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, and it has happened again today.

In an article in inews outlining the imminent collapse of 777 Partners' purchase of Everton, it is mentioned that Newcastle retain an interest in Onana.

Everton whacked a £70m price tag on Onana

The 22-year-old has been linked to Newcastle in the past and with Everton's precarious financial position, the Toffees would find it difficult to turn down bids for the Belgian.

Everton had slapped a £70million price tag on Onana, who Darren Bent once hailed as 'outstanding', but nobody is likely to want to fork out that much and Everton may have to lower their expectations as the window goes on.

Unless an Everton buyout is fast-tracked with Crystal Palace part-owner John Textor interested, they're going to have to sell this summer to get themselves off the Premier League's radar after being hit with two points deductions for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

Everton could sell Jarrad Branthwaite in a bid to keep Amadou Onana

Everton have a few players who could be shifted to bring their finances under control with Jarrad Branthwaite a coveted figure this summer. If Branthwaite were to move he would command a hefty sum which would then ease the pressure for Everton to sell Onana.

As Newcastle continue to weigh up their options for a defensive midfielder, Onana is a decent option, but Ederson from Atalanta is the more exciting one right now and Newcastle have been chasing that one for a while.

We can't see the Onana one happening, but we'd be amazed if he's still at Everton come August.
