Newcastle United and Everton have cast their eyes to League One side Peterborough United as they look to unearth more young talent.

Peterborough United is the home of the England U20 captain Ronnie Pickering Edwards who is starting to attract interest from the Premier League according to Graeme Bailey.

Bailey told The Boot Room that the Newcastle along with Everton, Brighton and Southampton are keeping tabs on the youngster and could make their move this summer.

The report also suggests that Peterborough could be ready to cash in on the 21-year-old making a move a real possibility.

Newcastle will have to negotiate with Barry Fry

Newcastle are one of several Premier League sides looking at Ronnie Edwards

At the moment it's believed that it is Southampton who are showing the most intent but the other three Premier League sides have also made contact with The Posh about Edwards.

The centre-back made 45 League One appearances last season and even scored two goals with another 10 appearances added across all other competitions.

There's no price tag on the defender as yet with Transfermarkt valuing him at around £2.5million, but they're not really a great barometer when it comes to transfer values.

Newcastle will have to get past Barry Fry if they want Ronnie Edwards

If Newcastle want to land Edwards they will, of course, have to deal with Peterborough chairman Barry Fry who holds Edwards in high regard with The Daily Record running quotes last year of Fry bestowing plenty of praise on his prize asset.

“Ronnie is an exceptional player and he will go. He is only 20 and he has played 19 times for England under-19s and 20s.

“He is the only player outside of the English Premier League in either of those two squads. He was part of the under-19 European Championship-winning team, played all four games at the World Cup at under-20 level.”

We'll have to keep an eye on developments with Southampton currently leading the race.
