Newcastle United still need to find the centre-back to take over the mantle from Fabian Schar after failing to land priority target Marc Guehi in the summer.

The Magpies spent an extraordinary amount of time and effort trying to sign the Crystal Palace and England defender after Eddie Howe reportedly told new sporting director, Paul Mitchell, it was either Guehi or nobody.

Other players had been looked at throughout the summer, before Mitchell's arrival and now Football Insider are reporting that one of those targets is back on the list.

Liverpool's Joe Gomez was linked to Newcastle a number of times during the summer window and was at one point believed to be part of the proposal that would have seen Anthony Gordon head to Anfield.

Newcastle and Aston Villa are eyeing Joe Gomez from Liverpool

Once Newcastle took that Anthony Gordon offer off the table, a move for Joe Gomez became increasingly unlikely.

However, with the season now underway, Gomez has clearly been pushed out by new boss Arne Slot which has given the Magpies hope that they could do a deal either in January or next summer.

Gomez is a centre-back by trade but is also comfortable playing as full-back on either side which makes him the ideal signing, and at 27 years old, he's at the peak of his powers.

Football Insider also claim that Aston Villa have their eye on Gomez too which could make for an interesting transfer battle.

Gomez is reportedly likely to make his first start of the season on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup and will no doubt be hoping to put on a strong display to prove Arne Slot wrong.

After the embarrassment this summer we hope that Newcastle abandon the idea of signing Marc Guehi and focus elsewhere, whether that be Joe Gomez or someone else.
