Newcastle United will be willing to sell players this summer as financial restrictions dictate how much the club can freely spend on new players.

In an ideal world, Newcastle's mind-bogglingly wealthy backers could just throw money at the club and allow us to spend money on whoever we want. But the Premier League have the Profit and Sustainability rules that stop this, and it seems they're taking them seriously handing out points deductions to Everton and Nottingham Forest so far, so we have to play nice.

Therefore, selling players this summer is pretty much essential. The quality of the players we sell is up for debate with a lot of focus on the Magpies having to sacrifice one of their top stars to fund a squad overhaul - Bruno Guimaraes being the most popular player linked with that scenario.

More realistically there are a few players who are prime candidates to be moved on, one of which is already attracting interest from Leeds United.

Leeds United are keen on Sean Longstaff if they get promoted

Sean Longstaff is being eyed by Championship promotion chasers Leeds United according to the Sunday Mirror (via The Yorkshire Post) who will offer Newcastle £15million for the Geordie midfielder should they gain promotion to the Premier League.

It's far from the £50million that was bandied around when Manchester United were sniffing around after he burst onto the scene, but let's be honest, his career has never hit the heights we all thought it would.

As much as we love Longy, he's definitely among the players we can afford to let go this summer. His lack of consistency this season has been so frustrating, and lately, he's been practically invisible.

Leeds may be cautious after their last purchase from Newcastle

If Leeds make their move in the summer they'll be hoping that Sean Longstaff fairs better for them than the last Newcastle player they bought.

The Yorkshire side took Karl Darlow off our hands in the summer and have lived to regret it ever since. Darlow has made just four appearances for Leeds since his move and in those games things didn't go well for the former Nottingham Forest stopper, leaking five goals. His debut came as a substitute after Ilian Meslier was sent off against Preston North End, where he went on to concede two goals with Leeds losing the game.

We feel the move would be a good one for Longstaff who has proved too many times this season that he's not quite up to the level required to compete for a European spot, despite his goal in the 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

It's time to be ruthless this summer and forget about sentimentality. We'll always appreciate what Longstaff has done, and what any player who is sold this summer has done, but we can't move forward without letting people go.
