Newcastle United are already working on targets for the January transfer window after the summer window failed to really deliver.

In the wake of Paul Mitchell's press briefing in which he admitted he took more of a supporting role this summer before he overhauls the scouting network, it seems one potential target remains of interest to the Magpies with contact having been made over a potential move.

Kevin Zenon is a name that will be familiar to many fans as Newcastle have often been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old.

Boca Juniors only signed Zenon from Union Santa Fe in January, but Newcastle have been monitoring the Argentine for a while after he managed eleven goal involvements in 32 outings this year.

Kevin Zenon keeps being linked with Newcastle

Two different outlets in Argentina credit Newcastle with an interest in Zenon

While the reports of Newcastle's interest are coming from Argentina, it is being picked up by two different outlets, both have slightly different takes on the story.

LT10 states that Newcastle have made contact with Boca Juniors over a deal and it's believed that they will want £15.2 million for his services as Union Santa Fe will reap 20% of that fee due to a sell-on clause.

Meanwhile, Uno Sana Fe are reporting that Zenon has an £11.4 million release clause in his Boca contract.

Newcastle will need to be sure Zenon can cut it in the Premier League

There's a long way to go before any decisions need to be made with this one, and the fact that the claims are coming from Argentina does often tend to suggest that there's not a great deal in the links.

However, Kevin Zenon is a name that won't go away, so there could be some truth in here.

Paul Mitchell's new-look scouting network will no doubt be sent to keen an eye on Zenon in the near future before any decision is made as they will need to be 100% convinced he can step up to the Premier League.
