Newcastle United are looking to add more young promising players to the squad

The Magpies have had success with youth in recent years, academy graduates like Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley are standout players who have made their names and become first team players straight from the academy.

Other players like Matty Longstaff made an early impression but moved on for pastures new.

More recently, Newcastle have been poaching a number of academy prospects from other clubs as part of a youth recruitment drive. Players like Alfie Harrison, Cathal Heffernan, Trevan Sanusi and Travis Hernes have come close to breaking into the Magpies first team.

Now, Newcastle are keen to add more young quality to their portfolio with this target coming from a local rival.

Newcastle United have scouted Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney

Hayden Hackney has a plethora of experience in the Championship at just 22 years old. He made his senior debut aged 18 in an FA Cup defeat to Brentford.

He has since gone on to make 84 appearances for Boro, becoming a reliable first team player for manager Michael Carrick's side.

Hackney recently captained Boro in their 3-3 draw against Norwich in October.

According to The Athletic, scouts from Newcastle have gone to watch Hackney and are keen on signing the England under-21 International.

The Magpies could sign Hackney for a fee of around £7million.

Newcastle United's historic interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin could resurface

The Magpies have been linked with a move for Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin for some time. Those talks reignited last summer as both teams looked to make a deal that would relieve their PSR worries.

The 27-year-old is out of contract this summer which could spark the Magpies into action. They signed young striker William Osula in the summer but he doesn't look ready for consistent first team football.

The Athletic also said that a free transfer can't be dismissed especially if Callum Wilson was to leave this summer.

Wilson's contract is also up at the end of the season, reports suggest he could be on his way out.
