Newcastle United legend Andy Cole believes that goalkeeper James Trafford "wouldn't let the club down" should he sign from Burnley this summer.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Magpies had bid a fee of £16million for the Englishman and had personal terms.
Since then talks have broken down and Trafford is staying put until Newcastle matches the £20m asking price Burnley has now placed on the 21-year-old.
Trafford was a regular figure in the Clarets side that finished 19th in the Premier League but was dropped for Arijanet Muric towards the end of the season as their return to the Championship was all but confirmed.
Speaking to Betfred, the former Newcastle striker said: “I think he’ll do okay,
“I watched him quite a bit the season before last when he was at Bolton and he was fantastic for them.
“Obviously Burnley went down last season, but you couldn’t pin it on him. He’s a young goalkeeper that’s got enormous talent and if you’re going for that kind of money at such a young age, then it means you’ve got talent."
Cole, who spent two years at Newcastle from 1993-1995 had a loan spell at Burnley before the end of his career where he scored six goals in 13 league games.
“If he did go to Newcastle, he certainly wouldn’t let them down. Cole added.
"The club has a few goalkeepers, so who’s ultimately going to be the number one? We have to wait and see.”
The Magpies are also interested in Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and Arsenal shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale who looks set to leave the Gunners after a lack of first-team football.
