Newcastle United are in the hunt for defensive reinforcements ahead of what promises to be a taxing campaign next season.

Whatever happens in the final three games, Newcastle will be partaking in European competition next season, which will add extra strain on the squad, and as we've already seen, our squad is not equipped to deal with the extra fixtures.

On top of that, our defenders are getting a bit long in the tooth. While they're all still performing well, a refresh certainly wouldn't hurt which is why at least one centre-back is a high priority this summer.

Marc Guehi remains high on the list of targets, but there's also a huge interest in Liverpool's Jarell Quansah, which remains after last summer.

Fabrizio Romano says Newcastle retain an interest in Jarell Quansah

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano was asked about Jarell Quansah's future in column for Give Me Sport, and the Italian dropped Newcastle's name in the mix.

“It's a possibility. It's not Liverpool trying to sell him but the player attracting interest with Newcastle and German clubs keen.”

Bayer Leverkusen are thought to be the Bundesliga side in question as they brace themselves for losing Jonathan Tah this summer.

Jarell Quansah has featured regularly for Liverpool but rarely as a starter

Quansah has made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League champions this season, most of which have come from off the bench.

The 22-year-old centre-back has deputised at right-back a few times, too, which could be of interest to Eddie Howe as he loves a versatile player.

If the price is right, a move for Quansah could be well worth it, possibly even better than trying again for Marc Guehi. As things stand it's expected a bid of £30 million could be enough to get a deal done.
