Newcastle United have just announced their first summer signing as Lloyd Kelly joins from Bournemouth but they're not about to rest just yet.

The Athletic's David Ornstein has now said that Newcastle along with Bayern Munich have joined Chelsea in reaching out to Crystal Palace over the potential signing on £65million-rated winger Michael Olise.

We thought Newcastle's chance had gone when reports surfaced of Chelsea's interest with the 22-year-old said to be keen to move to Stamford Bridge after rejecting them a year ago.

The winger who Pep Guardiola once called 'incredible' was the subject of a bid last year when Chelsea activated his release clause, but the Palace winger opted to stay put.

Michael Olise has a £60million release clause

When Olise rejected Chelsea last year he signed a fresh four-year deal with Palace which upped his release clause to £60million which it now looks like several clubs are looking to activate.

It's now believed he'd be much more open to a move to Chelsea, but Bayern Munich and Newcastle United will be hoping to convince him otherwise.

Newcastle are looking for a talented winger to operate down the right and Michael Olise would be an amazing coup for the Toon but the competition will be fierce.

Despite all the talk of Newcastle needing to sell to unlock their ability to spend this summer, going after a £60million player is certainly sending a different message.

The time for Newcastle to beat Chelsea to a signing is NOW

Chelsea probably fancy themselves as favourites, especially with Olise already being in London. Also, while other clubs probably use PowerPoint to make their case, we assume Chelsea use GunPoint because they always seem to get their man.

There has to come a day when Newcastle can beat Chelsea to the signing of a top player, please let this be it. Our club is on a much better trajectory than theirs right now, if players made their decisions purely on ambition and footballing reasons, surely nobody would choose Chelsea over us right now.

Is that us being biased or simply being realistic? Who knows.
