'Newcastle have a much better style of play': Slovenian pundit says Benjamin Sesko made a big mistake this summer
Newcastle United were beaten to the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko by Manchester United in the summer, before they bagged Nick Woltemade.
It was a tough old window for Newcastle as they looked for a striker capable of replacing Alexander Isak. Identifying the targets was easy enough. Persuading them to join Newcastle over other Premier League clubs, not so much.
Annoyingly for many Newcastle fans, we kept seeing players linked with a move to Tyneside opt to move to Manchester United despite their obvious decline over the years. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last season and didn't qualify for any form of European competition.
What they had going for them was money and a legacy that was diminishing with each season. However, it's strong enough that foreign players still see them as the club in England.
Newcastle fans feel they dodged a bullet by not signing Benjamin Sesko
Unfortunately for those players, reality hits hard once they turn up, and Benjamin Sesko, who rejected a move to Newcastle in favour of the water feature that is Old Trafford, must be feeling like reality hits like Mike Tyson.
Still to score a goal for his new club, Sesko looks actually awful playing in the Premier League, with many Newcastle fans regularly speaking about how we've dodged a bullet.
It seems that Sesko's poor choice hasn't gone unnoticed back home in Slovenia either.
Slovenian pundit Tine Zupan says Newcastle's style is better suited for Benjamin Sesko
Tine Zupan, a Slovenian commentator and pundit, recently told Slovenian outlet RTVSLO that he feels Sesko made a huge mistake.
“I think Newcastle have a much better style of play for Šeško’s characteristics. Newcastle’s style is a better reflection of what he was used to in Leipzig. They are an extremely direct team, very fast, looking for a different way to score than Manchester United. We saw a big problem with Rasmus Hojlund last season, who was the last striker before Šeško. His shot-on-target statistics were terrible. He had games and games when he didn’t get a shot and now we see it with Šeško.
“Neither Manchester United nor Arsenal have the ideal game for Benjamin Šeško. Arsenal is because they are dominant and Šeško needs space for his game. At United, for the first time this season, we are seeing the beginnings of Amorim’s game, which is significantly more possession-oriented than last season.”
Oh well. You live and learn, eh, Benjamin?
