Newcastle United could still make a move for a long-term target as he remains without a club.

The transfer window might be closed but Newcastle could still move to bring in a free agent that they've had their eye on for a couple of years.

Adrien Rabiot left Juventus when his contract expired at the end of June and the World Cup finalist with France is still without a club.

Manchester United and Newcastle are said to be among the clubs contemplating a move for the 29-year-old according to French outlet Le Figaro (via Sport Witness).

Dider Deschamps has called Adrien Rabiot's situation 'embarrassing'

Despite having offers from Turkey, Rabiot is holding out for something better, in the meantime, though, due to having no club, Didier Deschamps opted to not call up Rabiot for the Nations League squad calling his situation "embarrassing".

"Adrien Rabiot has a somewhat embarrassing situation. His contract was expiring and he was solicited by several teams but now he's without a team and doesn’t train in a group.

"I hope he can quickly choose a club that can then bring him back to us."

Newcastle fans aren't too keen on signing Rabiot

Rabiot has long been admired by Newcastle with the Mapgies weighing up a move last summer when Rabiot was close to leaving Juventus before signing on for another year.

This time he thought the offers would be there if he let his Juventus contract expire, but none were forthcoming.

Plenty of Newcastle fans have voiced their concerns about signing Rabiot based mainly on his attitude. He has the skills to improve the squad, but his personality just doesn't fit the Eddie Howe template.
