There's now less than a week to go until the January transfer window closes and as it stands it's been an uneventful one for Newcastle United in terms of actual transfers.
So far only Javier Manquillo has departed on a permanent basis and at the time of writing we're still awaiting confirmation on the signing of Alfie Harrison from Manchester City for the youth squad.
Rumours of player exits has drowned out any noise on potential incomings which was already being drowned out by the sounds of the Newcastle board crying poverty thanks to the restrictions imposed by FFP.
However, it would seem that Eddie Howe has not given up hope.
When asked about possible new signings in his pre-match press conference this morning, Howe admitted to being in the dark somewhat but also said that things are changing daily (via The Chronicle).
"I don't know. Things are changing on a daily basis. We're working behind the scenes on targets. But there's no guarantee it will happen.
"It's my end to try and leave the window with the strongest squad possible and that won't change."
It still stinks of a disconnect between Howe and the board, but that's going to happen at any club, especially with FFP lurking in the background. After the harsh punishment thrown at Everton, Premier League owners will be absolutely bricking it when it comes to their finances now.
We know Newcastle will one day get to a position where they can compete with the big boys but it's not going to be this month.
We just have to bide our time. Our day is coming.
