Newcastle United are compiling a list of alternatives as the Marc Guehi deal trickles along with no clear indication of what the outcome will be.

The Magpies can't afford to put all their eggs in one basket when it comes to Marc Guehi. If the deal falls apart Newcastle will need to act fast to bring in an alternative defender.

One player who has been linked with Newcastle a lot this summer is Liverpool and England centre-back, Joe Gomez.

The 27-year-old was left out of Liverpool's opening day squad by new manager Arne Slot suggesting that Gomez' future lies elsewhere.

Newcastle are keeping tabs on the Gomez situation

Several Premier League clubs are keen on Joe Gomez

HITC has claimed that Newcastle holds an interest in Gomez and that talks are already taking place with Gomez' representatives over a potential Liverpool departure before the window closes.

Brentford and West Ham are also interested but it's claimed that Aston Villa are out in front at the moment having already reached out to Liverpool over a deal.

Newcastle are still at the table for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, but will no doubt be keeping an eye on the Gomez situation.

We don't see Joe Gomez as the answer

As for how we feel about this one ... Gomez is not the one for us. If we do have to give up on Guehi then we'd prefer the club to bring in someone of a similar age or younger to become a long-term partner for Sven Botman.

Also, Joe Gomez' injury record is a huge red flag. He's a talented defender, clearly, having represented Liverpool and England, but his injury record is almost Callum Wilson-esque.

It might be worth having another crack at Malick Thiaw or taking a chance on Jarrad Branthwaite, or a player like that, but going for someone over 26 years old doesn't seem like the right fit for what we're going for.
