Newcastle United today announced a new position has been filled as Dr Ian Mitchell has agreed to join the backroom staff.
In a very 21st century football move, Newcastle have appointed Dr Ian Mitchell as the club's sporting psychologist as announced on the official website this morning.
The announcement states "Ian will enable and support a performance psychology provision across the football club, working with players and staff across men's, women's and Academy teams, including players out on loan at other clubs."
It's another move the club have made to make sure there is harmony right across the club so that there's no change in culture should a player move from the academy to the first team, something Dan Ashworth was keen to implement after his appointment.
Dr Ian Mitchell is a former professional footballer and has worked as a psychologist for Swansea and Sheffield United, but has also been part of international set-ups with England and Wales. He was part of Gareth Southgate's staff when England finished runners up at Euro 2020.
Having someone like Dr Mitchell on Newcastle's staff should help players with their ability to focus on the football and keep their heads focused which in turn should translate into an overall winning mentality.
I'd say that his biggest task will be getting the lads ready for the psychological toll a trip to Wembley takes, as last year Eddie Howe's Mags lost focus going into the Carabao Cup final where they were comfortably beaten by Manchester United.
With a sports psychologist on board, he should be able to help them overcome that pressure.
Dr Mitchell will join Newcastle next month after serving his notice period with the Welsh FA and has spoken about joining Newcastle saying:
"I am delighted for the opportunity to join Newcastle United at this exciting time.
The club has an ambitious vision with values that strongly resonate with me. This role will allow us to develop a team and structure that positively impacts on the performance and wellbeing of our staff and players.
I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the club and will be fully committed to contributing to the continued success at Newcastle United."
