Callum Wilson's back surgery is set to keep the Newcastle United striker out of action for the start of the new season.

It's a familiar story at this point but the difference is that Newcastle have time to do something about it, namely signing a new striker.

As we said this morning, we don't have to be looking to sign a world-class forward to compete with Alexander Isak for the starting berth, we don't even need someone to replace Callum Wilson until next summer, what we need is someone who can ride the bench when one of our main strikers are injured and maybe step in every now and then to give us another option.

Callum Wilson is in the last year of his contract and it's highly unlikely that we'll keep him beyond this upcoming season - there's no way Eddie Howe wins that battle again.

Will Osula is being eyed by Newcastle

£10 million should bring Will Osula to Newcastle

Alan Nixon has today written on his Patreon blog that Newcastle have a cost-effective option in mind to fill that third-choice striker position.

The Magpies are reportedly eyeing 20-year-old Sheffield United forward, Will Osula who should be allowed to leave for £10 million.

Newcastle will see him as one for the future but will have enough confidence in the youngster to fill that third-choice role next season.

Will Osula's Premier League record is nothing to get excited about

Osula's record in the Premier League won't set hearts racing with the Dane failing to register a single goal in 23 outings for the Blades last season, however, he did get three goals in two FA Cup games.

It's another potential signing that won't get the Geordie faithful off their seats and it's unlikely to ease the growing frustration surrounding the club's lack of transfer business, but it is a step in the right direction and it would at least mean we aren't going into another season with just two strikers.

We'd love to know what happened to these Jonathan David links. We should have known that was too good to be true.
