Whether we like it or not, the situation between Newcastle United and Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi is still an active one and needs covering.

You're probably getting sick of hearing about it now, we're getting sick of writing about it, but at the same time, it's really all there is to talk about.

If we didn't cover the latest news then we're not doing our jobs, are we?

So the latest is coming from Luke Edwards, journalist for The Telegraph, who gave an update via X this afternoon suggesting Newcastle's latest bid hasn't been rejected.

Newcastle's latest bid hasn't actually been rejected

The way Edwards words it is akin to how we've been thinking about things - essentially it's not a case of bidding and being rejected, it's an ongoing discussion with tweaks being made to the deal by both parties until an agreement is reached.

At least that's how it would make sense to us as people who have never been involved in a football transfer.

Edwards has said he is "mystified" by the idea of there being multiple bids, which we totally understand.

Negotiations are more fluid than simply a series of bids

It's not like the old days when all the bidding was done by fax, it's the 21st century, the internet age, we've got mobile phones with internet access, and everything can be done in an instant so this idea of waiting for bids to come in and be rejected doesn't really add up.

Obviously, there'll be time between the discussions in which the clubs have time to discuss the deal and next moves away from the other club, but that's it.

Edwards suggests that Newcastle will walk away if no progress is made this week, and frankly, we absolutely have to. We need a defender in before the window closes and we can't risk letting Crystal Palace stretch this out to deadline day and then reject the deal at the 11th hour.
