Newcastle United released Matty Longstaff last summer and the 23-year-old has been without a club ever since.

The younger brother of Sean Longstaff, Matty burst onto the scene at Newcastle with a stunning goal that bagged a win for the Magpies over Manchester United, unfortunately, that introduction was also the peak of his Newcastle career.

Matty made 20 appearances for the Newcastle first team in all competitions, scoring three goals. He also spent time out on loan at Mansfield Town, Aberdeen and Colchester United. It at Colchester in December 2022 when Matty picked up the anterior cruciate ligament injury that put a halt on his career.

Newcastle helped Matty Longstaff with his recovery even after letting him go

Even though Newcastle released Matty from the club, they supported him through his rehabilitation allowing him access to medical staff and the club's facilities while he returned to fitness which was a beautiful little touch by the club.

Now after months of hard work, Longstaff has managed to find himself a new club and will be looking to get his career back on track.

It was announced today that Matty Longstaff has joined Toronto FC in the MLS which means little Matty Longstaff will soon be going head-to-head with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets.

Longstaff will team up with another North East lad in the MLS

Toronto FC's coach John Herdman is from Consett so that should ease Longstaff into the transition having someone from his home region to help him settle in.

Hopefully this is the move that gets Matty back on the road to realising the potential we all thought he had after that blistering debut.

Best of luck, Lil Longy!
