Newcastle United could go back in for Marc Guehi as their preferred option for a new central defender after the month-long saga from last year resulted in nothing but frustration and resentment of Steve Parish.

Parish strung Newcastle along for weeks in talks over a move for Guehi before it became clear that no matter what Newcastle offered, there was no deal to be done.

A year on, though, and the pendulum has swung in the buying clubs' favour with Guehi entering the final year of his deal.

It's now believed that £40 million would be enough to sign the England star, but as has been the case all summer, Newcastle could find it tricky to get their man.

Newcastle could be set to revive their interest in Marc Guehi, but St James' Park isn't his preferred destination

Guardian journalist Ed Aarons has reported that Newcastle are set to revive their interest, but also states that Liverpool are still keen, and that would be Guehi's preferred destination.

"Understand Crystal Palace yet to receive offers for Marc Guehi, who is said to be happy to stay at Selhurst Park and see out final year of his contract. Liverpool still thought to be his preferred option but Newcastle could revive interest. Palace want £40m (rejected £70m in Jan)"

If Liverpool enters the race, then it's game over for Newcastle. There have also been reports that Guehi could run down his contract in the hope of finding a big club next summer as a free agent.

Newcastle have plenty of alternative targets for centre back

Liverpool's interest may have cooled, especially if they're about to break the British transfer record on some guy called Alexander Isak, so Newcastle still have hope, however faint.

Thankfully, when it comes to centre backs, Newcastle have a decent list of alternatives with Giorgio Scalvini apparently topping the list.

Time is running out for Newcastle to get their business done, however, especially if they want players in before the first game of the season, which would certainly be preferable.
