Manchester United look set to take another member of Newcastle United's backroom staff, not too long after the Dan Ashworth debacle that ran on for months.

Negotiations between Newcastle and Man United got a bit tense as they fought over a compensation package for sporting director Dan Ashworth, who had barely got settled in his job at St James' Park before negotiating his exit.

That move ultimately didn't work out well for the former Brighton man and he was let go just months into his tenure at Old Trafford, ultimately being replaced by Jason Wilcox.

Now, Wilcox is looking to take one of our backroom staff off our hands in the form of our head of youth recruitment, Paul Midgley.

Paul Midgley is set to team up with Jason Wilcox again at Manchester United

Midgley joined Newcastle three years ago from Leeds United and has overseen the arrival of some exciting young talent, including the likes of Sam Alabi, who was recently called into the first-team squad in the Champions League.

Jason Wilcox and Midgley have history, having worked together at Manchester City, and the Daily Mail claims that Midgley has been selected for the role over nine other candidates.

Their report does say that they expect Newcastle to put up some resistance to Midgley's exit, citing the negotiations over Dan Ashworth as a case in point.

Remember when we didn't even know that head of youth recruitment was even a job?

We're not sure whether it's just a case that there's more of a spotlight on the backroom operations at a football club these days, or if our staff turnover is abnormally high.

In years gone by, you'd not even know that such roles even existed at a football club, never mind knowing the names of those who occupy them, but now every staff movement seems to be newsworthy.

Hopefully, Ross Wilson already has someone in mind to replace Midgley and that they have as good an eye for talent as he seemed to have.
