On Tuesday morning Eddie Howe told the press that Newcastle United won't be able to sign a central defender and a winger in this transfer window.

It is a huge blow to fans who have been waiting for a new right winger for the past five transfer windows seeing one arrive and then be sold before making a single appearance in the form of Yankuba Minteh.

Newcastle look set to finally wrap up a £70 million deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi which, by all accounts, will wipe out the club's budget again.

However, the loan market may still be an avenue for Newcastle to explore to bring in the winger we are all so desperate to see come in.

Raheem Sterling has been linked with a move to Newcastle

Chelsea and Man United looking to swap Sterling and Sancho

The Telegraph has reported today that two potential players Newcastle could have looked at to fill the gap are now involved in a potential swap deal.

Manchester United and Chelsea have opened discussions about Raheem Sterling, who had been linked with Newcastle, heading to Old Trafford with Jadon Sancho heading the other way.

We'd floated the idea that Sancho could have been a player Newcastle should have looked at for a loan move this season - although dealing with Manchester United may be tricky given the bad blood between the two clubs in the wake of the Dan Ashworth saga.

Newcastle are running out of options anyway

With Federico Chiesa potentially heading to Liverpool too, Newcastle are running out of options.

Eddie Howe said it is unlikely the club could move for a winger, but it may be taken out of the club's hands anyway if there's no suitable players left available.

Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy to push us back to the Champions League it is then, eh?
