The time to activate Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes' £100million release clause is running out with the deadline of 24th June fast approaching.
Bruno's £100million release clause has been a hot topic of discussion since it was announced that the clause had been inserted into his new Newcastle deal.
Before the details were made public, it was just assumed that the clause would remain active for all time and anyone who had £100million burning a hole in their pocket could activate it.
More details emerged and it was made clear that only clubs who play in the Champions League could activate it (at one time it was believed that it only applied to clubs outside of England), and it was later shared that the deal had a one-month window.
Newcastle very cleverly set the clause to be active from the end of the season for one month with the cut-off date coming before the new Profit and Sustainability Reporting year, meaning only clubs with £100million lying around from the previous season could realistically activate it.
Recently it was believed that Manchester City had pressed the button, but it was later proven to just be ITK talk online, however, their interest is genuine but with just a week to go, they, like every other club that has been linked, are unlikely to do anything about it.
ESPN have reported that the only way that Manchester City would activate Bruno's clause is if one of Kevin De Bruyne, Matheus Nunes or Bernardo Silva asked to leave this summer.
Man City are apparently prepared to head into next season with the same squad that won the Premier League title for a record fourth time in a row.
Time is very much on Newcastle's side, so if any of the aforementioned trio do decide they want to move on from Pep Guardiola's side (which is highly unlikely), they'd have to make it known immediately to leave enough time to get the deal done for Bruno, otherwise, Newcastle are back in control of how much he'd cost, and it would for sure be more than £100million.
Not to mention the fact that City would have to convince Bruno to leave Newcastle this summer, and we're not sure he would do that even for City just yet.
