Long-term Newcastle United target heading for Premier League return this month - Fabrizio Romano
There are a few players that seem to be inextricably linked with Newcastle United in every transfer window, with varying degrees of truth to them.
This month has been perhaps the first transfer window in the last couple of years where we haven't actually noticed Newcastle's name being mentioned alongside that of England midfielder Conor Gallagher.
Newcastle were constantly rumoured to be interested in the midfielder before he left Chelsea for Atletico Madrid, and those links never went away, even after his move to Spain.
There were whispers of Gallagher towards the back end of last year, but nothing substantial, and now that the window is open, we've been mercifully spared the links.
Conor Gallagher is closing in on a return to the Premier League with Aston Villa
Now it looks as though Aston Villa are set to put an end to the links once and for all (hopefully).
Fabrizio Romano has posted today on X that Villa are closing in on a move for the 25-year-old with verbal agreements in place.
"More on Conor Gallagher. Aston Villa verbally agreed deal with Atlético Madrid today.
"Tottenham also asked for Gallagher deal conditions after [Rodrigo] Bentancur injury today.
"Villa had initial green light from Gallagher but waiting for next steps on player side."
Conor Gallagher - I just don't get it
Conor Gallagher is clearly a good player. He must be. He keeps getting picked for England, he's played for Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, and now both Aston Villa and Spurs want him, but I've just never seen the appeal, personally.
There are probably plenty of Newcastle fans who think he'd be a great signing for us, but I've just never got my head around it, and now it looks like I won't have to.
Watch him go to Villa this month and be absolutely sensational just to prove me wrong.
