Newcastle United have formally announced the signing of Lloyd Kelly on a free-transfer following his departure from Bournemouth.

Kelly had told Bournemouth that he was to leave the club when his contract expired at the end of the season which sparked Newcastle into action.

Eddie Howe was the one who gave Kelly his shot at the Premier League five years ago when he signed for Bournemouth from Championship side Bristol City.

Now, in his first interview since becoming a Newcastle player, Kelly has spoken about his relationship with Howe and how that affected his decision to join Newcastle.

Lloyd Kelly says it didn't take much to sell him on the move to Newcastle

Kelly was asked how Eddie Howe sold him on the move to Newcastle after previously selling him on Bournemouth.

"Newcastle as a whole, everyone knows their backstory and how big the club is, but for me to come here and speaking to the gaffer, it didn't really need to take much. The gaffer knows how highly I think of him and the way he shapes his teams and wants his teams to play suits my attributes.

"When I moved from the Championship to the Premier League I was still so young and although we only had a year together, it kind of felt that it was unfinished."

Newcastle can now get cracking onto the next target

Lloyd Kelly officially becomes the first signing of the summer and it's not just great that we've moved so quickly to get a player in, but that we've announced it straight away. I was convinced we'd wait until next month after his Bournemouth contract officially expires, even though the likes of Chelsea have announced Tosin Adarabioyo's arrival before his Fulham contract officially ended.

Now it's on to the next one for Eddie Howe as well as trying to find new clubs for a few players as the squad shake up gets underway.

Welcome to the Toon Lloyd!
