Newcastle United may find themselves around the negotiating table with Liverpool once again sooner rather than later if a recent report is to be believed.

Arne Slot feels that Liverpool need more options in their defence, with Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, and their 18-year-old new signing, Giovanni Leoni, who Liverpool fans got into their head was them getting one over on Newcastle by beating us to his signature, looks to be out for the season after picking up an ACL injury on his Liverpool debut.

It seems that spending half a billion pounds in one transfer window still doesn't fix all of your problems.

Now, TalkSPORT are suggesting that the Reds have a popular Newcastle United star on their radar as they look at potential options for January signings.

Hands off!

Liverpool have marked Sven Botman as a potential January target

Newcastle's Dutch defender Sven Botman, who cost the Magpies £35 million, is one of several stars Arne Slot has on his list.

Botman is just starting to get to full speed after spending so much time out of action with two separate knee issues last season.

He is forming a very exciting partnership with former AC Milan star Malick Thiaw, and the idea of selling him now is likely to infuriate Newcastle fans, especially if he's sold to Liverpool.

We're confident that Newcastle will keep hold of their Rolls Royce

Fortunately, we don't think this one will go anywhere. Botman is adored by Eddie Howe, and tying him down to a new deal is thought to be a high priority for the club.

Liverpool, meanwhile, has several other targets in mind, so they won't be putting all their eggs in the Botman basket, which should make it easier for Newcastle to turn them away.

We know how good Botman is; it has just been a case of his injury issues that have put a question mark over him, but what he and Thiaw are building at the heart of Newcastle's defence is mouthwatering. We must keep hold of him.
