Liverpool fan site performs stunning mental gymnastics to suggest £55m Newcastle United signing will open door for Alexander Isak sale
Liverpool fans are starting to be as creative as Arsenal fans were when they were convinced that Alexander Isak was going to leave Newcastle United for them.
Firstly, we absolutely acknowledge that the article in question is one fan's opinion, and we mean no ill will towards the author, but their wilful ignorance can not go unchecked.
As much as we don't know the details around Liverpool's transfer budget, we're pretty sure a Liverpool fan won't know Newcastle's status either, and with the lack of signings by the Magpies in recent windows having been put down to PSR issues, it's likely that fans of rival clubs could think that we are still running close to maxing out our PSR headroom.
Of course, the reality is that by keeping our powder dry for the last three windows, we're now in a much stronger position financially, but Anfield Watch have managed to concoct a scenario which sees Anthony Elanga's arrival leading to Alexander Isak's departure to Liverpool.
Anthony Elanga's arrival at Newcastle will be seen as a good thing for Alexander Isak
Anthony Elanga coming to Newcastle should have the exact opposite effect for Isak. Bringing in his fellow countryman, and someone whose talent he knows well, should settle the striker's nerves as he is set to open talks over a new deal.
Anfield Watch's reasoning is that the Elanga deal will have wiped out Newcastle's PSR headroom and they will now need to cash in a top player to get back under the PSR limits.
The reality is that Newcastle are fine, and still have more money remaining with which to do more business.
Sean Longstaff's move to Leeds United will effectively write off the Elanga move on this year's PSR reporting
Sean Longstaff is likely to be heading for the St James' Park exit with a £12 million move to Leeds United in the offing, and with Longstaff being an academy product, that deal will represent pure profit for the Magpies.
Thanks to amortisation, the money we get for Longstaff will offset the first year's payment for Elanga which, if he signs a five-year deal as expected, will equate to £11m-a-year for five years.
So we hate to break it to you, Anfield Watch, but Anthony Elanga's arrival will have no bearing on whether or not Alexander Isak moves to Liverpool ... at least not an effect that works in your favour.
We will echo the sentiments at the end of your article, though ... Rest In Peace, Diogo Jota.
