Liverpool have set their sights on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and could use £45m Newcastle United target to find their raid.

We knew there was no way that Newcastle could have a clear run at Marc Guehi without another big club getting involved at some point, and it looks like it's Arne Slot's Liverpool who will provide the competition for the Magpies.

The Sun have claimed that Crystal Palace may demand as much as £75 million for the England centre-back, which could be out of Newcastle's reach, although nobody outside of the club knows what Newcastle's budget actually is this summer.

It does look likely that a bidding war could kick off between the two clubs.

Liverpool still want Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon remains in Liverpool's sights

Meanwhile, The Sun also says that the Reds have not given up on Anthony Gordon either and could use Joe Gomez to fund that move which could then see Newcastle going back to Crystal Palace to snap up Eberechi Eze, who has a £60 million release clause, to replace Gordon.

It all sounds a bit convoluted and messy, so this is what we believe should happen - Newcastle sign Marc Guehi and keep Anthony Gordon. Crystal Palace can keep Eze and Liverpool can just get in the sea.

Liverpool entering the fray for Guehi is a worry. For all we don't think Champions League football will be the ultimate deciding factor in Guehi's decision, Liverpool are a tough team to turn down.

Let's hope that Newcastle move quickly now

We are hanging on to the hope that Guehi's love of St James' Park will be enough to tip the scales in our favour.

If this move is to happen though, we want to get it done quickly. We've wasted enough time and with less than two weeks until the Premier League gets underway, we'd love to have Guehi to have had at least a couple of training sessions with the lads before Southampton come to St James' Park.

Especially when there's still a winger to bring in too.
