Newcastle United are thought to be one of several Premier League clubs keen to try and take advantage of Liam Delap's £30 million release clause that became active when Ipswich Town's relegation was confirmed at the weekend.

The Manchester City academy product has impressed in his first year as a regular Premier League starter despite featuring in a struggling Ipswich Town side who were consigned back to the Championship following their defeat to Newcastle on Saturday.

The Tractor Boys' relegation confirmed that Delap will be able to leave the club if a club comes in with an offer of £30 million, which several are expected to do.

Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Newcastle are all keen, while Man City have a buy-back clause in his contract too, which they could look to exploit.

Newcastle would have to make Liam Delap one of their highest earners

Newcastle may now be having second thoughts, however, as The Chronicle are reporting that Liam Delap's wage demands may be enough to make the Magpies look elsewhere.

"With Delap expected to ask for wages between £120,000 to £150,000 per week in any talks with rivals, Newcastle would have to think long and hard about making the 22-year-old one of their top earners."

Those wages would put him right up there with the likes of Joelinton and even Bruno Guimaraes at Newcastle United, whereas at Chelsea he'd probably be on par with the kit man.

We're not buying into those wage demands

We do absolutely rate Liam Delap, and definitely think he's got the potential to be a top, top player, but we're not sure a season at Ipswich is enough to justify such high wages right out of the gate.

Players need to earn these ridiculous wages rather than kicking the hinges off the boardroom door at the start of negotiations and trying to tell those in charge what they feel they're worth.

Could Liam Delap be a £ 150,000+ a week player? Absolutely, but he needs to prove it first: 12 Premier League goals and no international caps does not sound like a £150,000-a-week player to us.
