Lewis Miley reacts to 'honour' bestowed upon him in closing stages of Newcastle United's win over PSV
It was a huge night of celebration on Tyneside last night as Newcastle United beat PSV 3-0 in the Champions League.
The Dutch league leaders came to Newcastle with an impeccable away record, and the Magpies knew they wouldn't be an easy opponent given that they battered Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield earlier in the season.
Both sides went into the game with key players missing, but it was PSV who struggled the most with that, and it seemed to make them very nervous, particularly at the back, which Newcastle exploited with their intense high press.
It took just eight minutes for Newcastle to pounce on a forced error and break the deadlock through Yoane Wissa. Then, just 22 minutes later, lightning struck twice, this time Wissa turned provider for Anthony Gordon to double the Toon's lead before Harvey Barnes rounded off the scoring in the second half.
Lewis Miley became Newcastle United's youngest-ever captain
It was a night that the Newcastle players could be very proud of, and while Yoane Wissa picked up the Player of the Match award and took the headlines, the night really belonged to someone else.
Newcastle's 19-year-old academy product, Lewis Miley, was bestowed the honour of the captain's armband when Kieran Trippier was withdrawn on 85 minutes, making him the club's youngest ever captain, something he has now recognised on social media as an 'honour'.
"A honour to wear the captains armband. ❤️
"Another amazing night in Europe at SJP. 🖤🤍"
Is it too soon to put Lewis Miley in the Leadership Group?
The lad's English could use some work, but given he spent much of his last year at school playing in the Premier League and the Champions League, we reckon he'll manage just fine.
Lewis Miley replaced Bruno Guimaraes in the first half after the Brazilian picked up a worrying injury, but you'd honestly never have known he was missing as Miley deputised brilliantly.
It might be a bit too soon to be promoting Miley to the Leadership Group, but there is potential for a slot to become available in the summer, depending on what Kieran Trippier decides to do next, so who knows?
