Leeds United retain interest in £15m Newcastle United defender and could make move this summer - journalist

Leeds United seem to be paying close attention to who could be ready to leave Newcastle United this summer having already been linked to Callum Wilson.

indeed, in the January transfer window, Leeds were said to be interested in a move for Newcastle left-back Matt Targett, but a move was never made.

Newcastle allowed Lloyd Kelly to move to Juventus in January and we doubt that the club would have been as cavalier to allow another left-sided defender to leave the club in the same window.

However, Newcastle are expected to undergo quite a squad overhaul this summer with a few incomings expected. A few outgoings will be on the cards too and Matt Targett could well be one of them.

Matt Targett signed for Newcastle for a total of £15 million following a successful loan spell from Aston Villa but has failed to reach anywhere near the levels he hit during his loan period.

In fact, Targett has spent much of his time as a Newcastle United player in the treatment room, which has made a huge case for him being surplus to requirements.

Journalist, Graeme Bailey has provided an update on Targett's situation to LeedsUnited.news with Daniel Farke having already expressed an interest in the 29-year-old.

“Matt Targett remains an interesting option for a number of clubs. He is more than likely to leave Newcastle this summer. Newcastle won’t stand in his way. There options for him in America, but he is someone who Leeds have looked at.”

A move to the MLS may be a good one for Matt Targett

Leeds look very likely to be promoted back to the Premier League this season and will be looking to add players with Premier League experience to their ranks to ensure they stay there, which is where Matt Targett fits in.

A move to America may not be a bad idea for Targett with the MLS being way less physical than the Premier League. He's more likely to keep fit playing over there.

It does seem very likely that Targett will leave the club this summer, it's just a case of where he ends up next and how much of that £15 million outlay the club can claw back.
